COLLECTING AND CLASSIFYING SOVIET PHOTOGRAPHIC CAMERAS

Tra gli apparecchi fotografici piщ interessanti dal punto di vista collezionistico sono senz’altro da includere la FED 1 fabbricata tra il 1934 ed il 1955, la ZORKI 1 fabbricata tra il 1948 ed il 1956 e la KIEV fabbricata tra il 1947 ed il 1987.

Amongst the most interesting and collectable cameras one must certainly include the FED 1 produced from 1934 to 1955, the ZORKI 1 produced from 1948 to 1956 and the KIEV produced from 1947 to 1987

La situazione politica mondiale del periodo di fabbricazione di questi apparecchi non ha permesso uno scambio di informazioni e dati necessari ad una classificazione semplice e sicura. Solo un paziente lavoro di molti anni e su moltissimi esemplari, ha permesso di mettere le basi di un progetto per dare un aiuto ed una guida a quanti vogliono cimentarsi nella collezione di questi apparecchi.

Ho parlato di “basi” in quanto sono convinto che molte informazioni ancora ci sfuggono e solo il paziente lavoro di ricerca e di classificazione da parte di tanti collezionisti che si scambiano le informazioni e le scoperte di cui verranno in possesso, potrа completare il quadro collezionistico in modo soddisfacente.

Unfortunately the political situation existing at the time of production of these cameras did not allow an exchange of information and data that would have helped in classifying in a simple and certain manner these products. Only a patient work over the years and the study of hundreds of cameras has allowed me to put the bases of what I consider to be an help to all those who want to try to collect these cameras.

I mentioned “bases” since I am convinced that a lot of information is still missing and only the patient and painstaking work of many collectors exchanging the information and discoveries they have made, will enable us to complete the picture on the production of these cameras in a satisfactory way

Da parte mia posso assicurare che non mancano certo le soddisfazioni nel collezionare questi apparecchi anche se oramai diventati rari e non piщ cosм facili da trovare. Il loro prezzo commerciale и comunque ben al di sotto del loro veo valore intrinseco sia per l’esiguo numero realizzato nella maggior parte dei modelli e sia anche per l’assurda moda di trasformare le FED e Zorki in pacchiane imitazioni di fantasiose Leica. Questo и un vero peccato perchй vengono cosм rovinati degli apparecchi che hanno una loro storia ed un loro fascino oltre che ad un loro valore.

On my part, I can guarantee that you are going to have a lot of satisfaction in collecting these cameras even if they are getting somewhat rarer than earlier. Their price is in any case still lower than their actual value considering the small numbers involved in the production of most models. Also the absurd fashion in vogue at present of transforming the FED or Zorki cameras into false Leicas, gold plated or with imaginary engravings, has caused the number of good cameras to be smaller and smaller.

In questi tre quaderni di appunti ho tracciato quello che io credo sia stato il ciclo produttivo di questi apparecchi con le date, i quantitativi prodotti con i relativi numeri di serie. Devo tanta riconoscenza a tanti collezionisti che, come me, hanno passato tanto tempo nello studiare i vari modelli per essere sicuri di poter identificare le varie caratteristiche e particolaritа di ogni modello.

In these “notebooks” I have tried to reconstruct the production periods of these cameras, with the dates, quantities and serial numbers to the best of present knowledge. I am thankful to the many fellow collectors who, like me, have spent much of their free time on studying and classifying these cameras in all peculiarities and characteristics for each model.
